Job Description

The Safety Officer is responsible for promoting, implementing, and monitoring workplace health and safety standards across construction projects. The role ensures compliance with company policies, client requirements, and applicable legislation while fostering a proactive safety culture that minimizes workplace incidents, injuries, and environmental impacts.

Key Responsibilities

Health & Safety Compliance - Implement and monitor the Company's Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ) Management System. - Ensure compliance with all applicable occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, standards, and client requirements. - Conduct routine site inspections and audits to identify hazards and ensure compliance. - Verify that work activities are performed in accordance with approved Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and Risk Assessments. - Monitor contractor and subcontractor compliance with site safety requirements. Risk Management - Identify workplace hazards and facilitate risk assessments. - Recommend and implement effective control measures. - Maintain hazard and incident registers. - Monitor corrective actions to ensure timely closure. - Participate in project planning meetings to identify potential risks before work commences. Incident Management - Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses, and unsafe acts. - Prepare detailed incident investigation reports. - Identify root causes and recommend corrective and preventative actions. - Maintain incident records and ensure appropriate reporting requirements are met. - Assist management in implementing lessons learned from incidents. Safety Inspections & Audits - Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly site inspections. - Perform workplace safety audits and compliance assessments. - Inspect plant, equipment, tools, scaffolding, lifting equipment, and work areas. - Monitor housekeeping standards across project sites. - Track and report safety performance indicators. Training & Awareness - Conduct site safety inductions for employees, contractors, and visitors. - Deliver toolbox meetings and safety briefings. - Promote safety awareness campaigns and initiatives. - Assist in developing training materials and safety procedures. - Monitor competency and training records of personnel. Emergency Preparedness - Assist in developing and implementing emergency response plans. - Coordinate emergency drills and exercises. - Ensure emergency equipment is maintained and readily available. - Act as a member of the Emergency Response Team where required. Documentation & Reporting - Maintain accurate safety records and documentation. - Prepare weekly and monthly HSE reports. - Update risk registers, training records, inspection reports, and audit findings. - Ensure all safety documentation is readily accessible and current. - Support project reporting requirements for clients and management. Environmental Management - Monitor compliance with environmental management plans. - Assist with waste management, pollution prevention, and environmental awareness activities. - Report environmental incidents and support corrective actions. - Promote environmentally responsible work practices. Safety Leadership - Promote a positive safety culture throughout the organization. - Encourage employee participation in safety programs. - Provide coaching and guidance to supervisors and workers on safe work practices. - Stop any work activity that presents an immediate danger to personnel, equipment, or the environment. - Lead by example and demonstrate commitment to workplace safety.

Requirements & Qualifications

- Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, or related discipline. - Recognized Safety Officer certification. - Valid First Aid Certificate. - Valid Driver's Licence. Desirable - Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety. - Incident Investigation Training. - Internal Auditor Training. - Emergency Response Training. - Construction Industry Safety Certification. Essential - Minimum 3–5 years' experience in a Safety Officer role within construction, civil works, mining, oil & gas, or infrastructure projects. - Experience conducting site inspections, audits, and incident investigations. - Experience implementing HSE management systems. Desirable - Experience working on remote site projects. - Experience managing client-specific safety requirements. - Experience with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems.
